On September 19th, 2017 The Commonwealth of Dominica was left in shambles by Hurricane Maria, which went
through the island as a category 5 hurricane. Hurricane Maria did not only impact the people of Dominica;
globally, many who saw the devastating scenes of the damage were left disheartened. Rotarian, Kay Doxilly was
one of those who felt the need to turn this heartbreak into an opportunity for service. Kay, being from the
neighboring island of St. Lucia, knew firsthand the plight of the people of Dominica in the wake of the hurricane.
Reaching out to President Mitch Zaba, of the Rotary Club of Regina, it was agreed that the Club would provide
aid to Dominica. The Club’s Community Fund, the membership and partners in the community came together to
supply 400 lbs. of relief items to the Island of Dominica. Included were; tarpaulins, diapers, baby wipes, toiletries,
sanitary products and cleaning supplies. In addition a bank draft of $2,150 CAD.
The Rotary Club of Regina wants to express special thanks to the Rotary Club of Gros Islet, St. Lucia for
partnering with us to ensure transportation of the supplies to Dominica by ferry; also for facilitating customs
clearing. Rotary greetings to the members of the Rotary Club of Portsmouth, Dominica for their commitment to
Service above Self, in helping coordinate relief efforts.
